The Big Dipper was at its largest as it moved across the Lake Nianque sky at Camp Ranachqua during the closing campfire of the Ranachaqua Foundation’s 90th Anniversary Jamboree. Scouts and Scouters had a perfect weekend experiencing Scouting in a historical setting.
I thought about the song, “We are the Out in Scouting” sung at the Philmont Training Center. The song reminds us the best learning experiences in Scouting takes place outdoors. Bronx youth participate in packs, troops, Venturing, Exploring, and Sea Scouting. Thousands of our members participated in programs at Ten Mile River Scout Camps, Alpine Scout Camp, and William H. Pouch Scout Camp this past summer.
We pay membership dues and camp fees and do not realize the costs involved for our Council to deliver the best of what Scouting has to offer. We have a service center, Scout Shops and three camp properties. Our costs include salaries for Professional staff, insurance, rent, automobile fleet, Scout Shop inventories and maintenance of our properties. It takes much work and funds to maintain program areas, roads, buildings, power lines and seven dams on seven lakes. Bronx Scouts can participate in the Pinewood Derby, camping, Pro Series Merit Badge events, staff our camps and join council-sponsored High Adventure contingents, all costing more than our fees.
Bronx River District volunteers will be providing Friends of Scouting presentations encouraging you to make comfortable contributions and to ask your friends, relatives, employers and local merchants to support our program. I speak from personal knowledge that our program provides life changing experiences that lasts a lifetime. Most of us know that our youth greatly benefit from the “out in Scouting”. It’s up to us to support our youth and give them this advantage in life. Please welcome our Friends of Scouting Ambassadors and have them show your contribution is an investment in our future.
Yours in Scouting,
Bronx River District Finance Chairman
